German Romanticism is commonly associated with nationalism rather than cosmopolitanism. Against this standard picture, I argue that the early German romantic author, Novalis (Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg, 1772–1801) holds a decidedly cosmopolitan view. Novalis’s essay “Christianity or Europe” has been the subject of much dispute and puzzlement ever since he presented it to the Jena romantic circle in the fall of 1799. On the basis of an account of the philosophical background of (...) class='Hi'>Novalis’s romanticism, I show that the image of the Middle Ages sketched in “Christianity or Europe” plays a symbolic role and should not be taken as a literal description of the historical past or as a blueprint for the future. Rather, the romantic picture of medieval Europe serves to evoke poetically the ideal of a cosmopolitan re-unification of humanity. (shrink)

Recent scholarship has helped to demythologise the life and work of Georg Philipp Friedrich von Hardenberg who, as the poet “Novalis”, had come to instantiate the nineteenth-century’s stereotype of the romantic poet. Among Hardenberg’s interests that seem to sit uneasily with this literary persona were his interests in science and mathematics, and especially in the idea, traceable back to Leibniz, of a mathematically based computational approach to language. Hardenberg’s approach to language, and his (...) attempts to bring mathematics to bear on poetry, is examined in relation to debates that developed late in the eighteenth century over the relation of language to thought—debates which share many features with contemporary ones in this area. Dann überstürzen sich die Ereignisse, als er den Ruf nach Jena erhält und dort im Sommersemester 1794 seine Vorlesungstätigkeit aufnehmen muß. Im April veröffentlicht er die Schrift Über den Begriff der Wissenschaftslehre oder der sogenannten Philosophie, als Einladungsschrift zu seinen Vorlesungen über diese Wissenschaft und gibt damit seiner Lehre den zunächst öffentlich rätselhaften, heute berühmten Namen. Parallel zu seiner Jenenser Vorlesung erscheint die Grundlage der gesamten Wissenschaftslehre, als Handschrift für seine Zuhörer, die bis zur Veröffentlichung des Nachlasses 1834/35 wichtigster Bezugspunkt (...) jeder Auseinandersetzung mit Fichte bleiben wird. Es findet sich jedoch keine Gelegenheit, die Druckbögen zu überarbeiten, und auch der 1795 nachgereichte Grundriss des Eigenthümlichen der Wissenschaftslehre, in Rücksicht auf das theoretische Vermögen stellt noch keine abgerundete, sinnvoll abgeschlossene Ausformulierung der Wissenschaftslehre dar. Zusammenfassung Das Thema des Gottesdienstes hat in der neueren theologiegeschichtlichen Forschung bislang keine hinreichende Beachtung gefunden. Die Diskussionen über die Notwendigkeit des Gottesdienstes, seinen Charakter und seinen Symbolgehalt führten am Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts zu einer grundsätzlichen Erörterung des positiven Charakters des Christentums und seiner institutionellen Rolle in der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft. Die Schriften Immanuel Kants, Carl Friedrich Stäudlins und Friedrich von Hardenbergs belegen den damaligen Wandel der Gottesdienstauffassung, indem sie die Ideen der Französischen Revolution und deren Implikationen für (...) das religiöse Leben thematisieren. Kants Unterscheidung von politischer und moralischer Religion nutzte Stäudlin, um die theophilanthropische Form eines aufklärerischen Gottesdienstes zu kritisieren. Novalis beurteilte die Theophilanthropie, die er als Negation jeglicher genuinen Religion ansah, ebenfalls kritisch. In Kants, Stäudlins und Novalis' Stellungnahmen zu Fragen des Gottesdienstes deutet sich zugleich der Übergang von aufklärerischen Religionskategorien zu frühromantischen Religionsmotiven an. First published in 1955, this volume contains three works by Friedrich von Hardenberg, the German Romantic philosopher and poet whose pseudonym Novalis was an ancient family name. The works, each given in the original German, include the only existing sections of Novalis's unfinished novel, Die Lehrlinge zu Sais; a selection of ideas published as a literary fragment in 1798 under the title Blütenstaub; and Die Christenheit oder Europa, an essay in cultural history. Of these, only Blütenstaub (...) was published before Novalis's death in 1801 at the age of 28. This volume also contains a preface in English by Brian A. This first scholarly edition in English of the philosophical writings of Novalis (Friedrich von Hardenberg), the German Romantic poet, philosopher, and mining engineer, includes two collections of fragments published in 1798, Miscellaneous Observations and Faith and Love, the controversial essay Christendom or Europe, and substantial selections from his unpublished notebooks.

En el presente artículo se analiza la relación filosófica entre la obra de Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814) y de Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis) (1772-1801). En particular se estudia el modo en que uno y otro concibieron el rol de la imaginación (Einbildungskraft) en el marco de sus ideas y pensamientos sobre filosofía. A su vez, este análisis conlleva determinar cuál es el tipo de relación metafísica que ellos establecieron entre los conceptos de lo finito y de lo (...) infinito. Esto último se presenta al interior de una clase particular de filosofía, a saber: el idealismo “de lo” absoluto o de lo finito, por contraposición al dogmatismo filosófico y al idealismo absoluto –encarnado en la filosofía de Hegel. Como consecuencia de este estudio en que se ponen en comparación las posturas de Fichte y de Novalis, se concluye que, para poder comprender de manera coherente sus posiciones, se tiene que resaltar el sentido moral de su pensamiento, en particular respecto de la fuerza de la imaginación en paralelo con los alcances de la facultad de la razón. The ArgumentIn this paper, the perception of mathematics by a nonspecialist, the Romantic poet Friedrich von Hardenberg (Novalis), is investigated. The study is intended to contribute to a better understanding of the interactions between mathematics and the surrounding scientific culture in Germany at the turn of the nineteenth century. In regard to the problem how the cultural reception of a theory can influence its conceptual development, I argue that the reaction of nonspecialists can be imagined as a (...) sort of resonating body. Some aspects of a theory are stressed, others are ignored or even suppressed. In this way the value system of a theory and thereby the choice of problems and the style of argumentation can be influenced by groups of people who are not active scientists. In fact, the case at hand shows that a change of values has taken place. The original aim of the combinatorial school, whose mathematics Novalis studied, was the mechanization of symbolical calculations. But later, presumably under the influence of the general cultural climate in Germany, this same mathematics was interpreted as furthering — in modern words — a study of abstract structures. (shrink)

En algún caso, porque el texto no fue aceptado por quienes debían publicarlo, como ocurrió con los Aforismos políticos. En (...) varios otros casos, porque no llegó siquiera a ser preparado para la imprenta, como ocurrió con los diversos proyectos incluidos por los editores en una sección titulada Vorarbeiten zu verschiedenen Fragmentsammlungen (“Trabajos preliminares para distintas colecciones de fragmentos”) en el volumen II de la edición más jerarquizada de su obra completa. Entre estos últimos “trabajos preliminares” están los así llamados Teplitzer Fragmente (“Fragmentos de Teplice”), traducidos aquí por primera vez al castellano. Why was mythology of vital importance for the romantics? What role did mythology play in their philosophical and literary work? And what common sources of influence inspired these writers across Britain and Germany at the turn of the nineteenth century? In this wide-ranging study, Owen Ware argues that the romantics turned to mythology for its potential to transform how we see ourselves, others, and the world. Engaging with authors such as William Blake, Friedrich Schlegel, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Friedrich (...) von Hardenberg (Novalis), and Percy Bysshe Shelley, Ware shows why they believed that neither perception nor reason alone can sustain a vision of the unity of all things. A new mode of cognition is necessary, they claimed, one that revives the poetic origin of mythology and reveals our own mythmaking powers. _Return of the Gods_ investigates the rise of mythology in the British and German traditions and the romantics’ practices of reinterpreting old myths and inventing new ones. This paper explores the reception of Kant's understanding of consciousness by both Romantics and Idealists from 1785 to 1799, and traces its impact on the theory of religion. I first look at Kant's understanding of consciousness as developed in the first Critique, and then looks at how figures such as Fichte, Jacobi, Hölderlin, Novalis, and Schleiermacher received this theory of consciousness and its implications for their understanding of religion.

Alexander Nehamas and others have recently attempted to revive a conception of ethics that is centered on self-formation and the values of aesthetic coherence. This conception faces several difficulties, including the lack of fit between models of aesthetic coherence in literary works and individual lives and an absence of determinate content. The argument of this paper is that both of these defects are absent from the work of one of the earliest and most vocal exponents of this conception of ethics, (...) Friedrich von Hardenberg (1772–1801), better known by his pseudonym “Novalis”. The paper begins by reviewing the growing consensus among scholars that Novalis makes a serious contribution to philosophy, and by pointing out the lack of attention paid to his moral philosophy. His conception of moral life as an infinite process of approximation the archetypal unity of the divine is then explicated in detail. Particular attention is paid to the manner in which his model of moral life and conception of aesthetic coherence avoids some of the difficulties faced by more recent theorists. (shrink)

Gemessen an Bedeutung, Rang und Wirkung steht die Rechtsphilosophie Hegels heute neben den Politiken von Platon und Aristoteles, dem Leviathan von Hobbes und dem Contrat social von Rousseau.Hegels "Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts" zählen zu den bedeutendsten Werken der neuzeitlichen Rechts- und Staatsphilosophie. In ihnen entwirft er teils unter Rückgriff auf das frühere ›Naturrecht‹, teils im Blick auf die politische und rechtliche Lage nach der Französischen Revolution und zu Beginn der Restaurationsepoche eine Philosophie des objektiven Geistes. Die 8., um ein Literaturverzeichnis erweiterte Auflage bietet den durchgesehenen Text der 6., nach der Originalausgabe neu herausgegebenen Text mit Anmerkungen von F. Nicolin und O. Pöggeler. Beigegeben sind eine Einleitung, Literaturverzeichnis und Personen- und Sachregister.

In der Reihe jena-sophia wird mit Hermann von Kehlers Mitschrift zu Hegels Ästhetikvorlesung aus dem Sommersemester 1826 ein wichtiges Dokument aus dem Besitz der Universitätsbibliothek Jena veröffentlicht. Hegel hat sich in dieser Vorlesung besonders intensiv mit der Kunst seiner Zeit auseinandergesetzt und ein breites Spektrum künstlerischer Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten vorgestellt, das vom Schönen über das Charakteristische bis zum Häßlichen reicht. Unter der Leitfrage seiner Ästhetik, der Frage nach der Relevanz der Kunst "für uns" und für die durch die Vernunftforderung bestimmte moderne Welt (...) sieht Hegel seine "These vom Ende der Kunst" bestätigt. Die Künste sind nicht die Quelle der modernen Kultur, sondern ein Faktor neben anderen. Dennoch bleibt die Kunst ein unverzichtbares Element der humanen Kultur. Ihre "Zukunft" liegt sowohl in der Vielfalt möglicher Gestaltung als auch in ihrer gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung: Die Pflege der Künste als Element der Bildung des Menschen fällt unter die Aufgaben des Staates; die Künste vermitteln dem modernen Menschen ein geschichtliches Bewußtsein sowohl aus den Quellen der eigenen Kultur, als auch durch die Integration des Fremden: der Weltkulturen. In der Enzyklopädie von 1827 hat Hegel die Ergebnisse dieser Vorlesung systematisch zu einer Erweiterung der ersten Paragraphen des "absoluten Geistes" über die Kunst genutzt. Daher bietet die Vorlesung nicht nur einen für Studenten (von Hegel selbst) entwickelten Einblick in seine Ästhetik, sondern auch die wissenschaftliche Grundlage für die systematische Erschließung seiner Philosophie der Kunst. Die vorliegende Edition präsentiert den Text der Hegelschen Vorlesung mit (kenntlich gemachten) Ergänzungen und Sachanmerkungen. The Hegel Lectures Series Series Editor: Peter C. Hodgson Hegel's lectures have had as great a historical impact as the works he himself published. Important elements of his system are elaborated only in the lectures, especially those given in Berlin during the last decade of his life. The original editors conflated materials from different sources and dates, obscuring the development and logic of Hegel's thought. The Hegel Lectures series is based on a selection of extant and recently discovered transcripts and (...) manuscripts. Lectures from specific years are reconstructed so that the structure of Hegel's argument can be followed. Each volume presents an accurate new translation accompanied by an editorial introduction and annotations on the text, which make possible the identification of Hegel's many allusions and sources. Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God Hegel lectured on the proofs of the existence of God as a separate topic in 1829. He also discussed the proofs in the context of his lectures on the philosophy of religion (1821-31), where the different types of proofs were considered mostly in relation to specific religions. The text that he prepared for his lectures in 1829 was a fully formulated manuscript and appears to have been the first draft of a work that he intended to publish and for which he signed a contract shortly before his death in 1831. The 16 lectures include an introduction to the problem of the proofs and a detailed discussion of the cosmological proof. Philipp Marheineke published these lectures in 1832 as an appendix to the lectures on the philosophy of religion, together with an earlier manuscript fragment on the cosmological proof and the treatment of the teleological and ontological proofs as found in the 1831 philosophy of religion lectures. Hegel's 1829 lectures on the proofs are of particular importance because they represent what he actually wrote as distinct from auditors' transcriptions of oral lectures. Moreover, they come late in his career and offer his final and most seasoned thinking on a topic of obvious significance to him, that of the reality status of God and ways of knowing God. These materials show how Hegel conceived the connection between the cosmological, teleological, and ontological proofs. All of this material has been newly translated by Peter C. Hodgson from the German critical editions by Walter Jaeschke. This edition includes an editorial introduction, annotations on the text, and a glossary and bibliography. (shrink)

Zu Hegels verschiedenen Vorlesungen über die «Philosophie des Rechts» gab es bisher jeweils nur eine Mit- oder Nachschrift seiner Schüler. Deshalb ließ sich schwer einschätzen, inwieweit diese die sich ändernden Vorstellungen Hegels über Recht und Staatsverfassung authentisch wiedergaben. Die neu aufgetauchte und erstmals kritisch edierte Nachschrift K. W. L. Heyses stammt aus dem Wintersemester 1822/23, aus dem es bisher die Mitschrift H. G. Hothos gab. Beide ergänzen sich gegenseitig und zeigen, daß Hotho und Heyse Hegels Darlegungen genau verfolgt und in (...) verkürzter Form notiert haben. Damit ist für Hegels Haltung wenige Jahre nach den Karlsbader Beschlüssen eine sicherere Textgrundlage als bisher gegeben. (shrink)

Die Suche scheint zunächst der Philosophie als Objekt oder Wissenschaft zu gelten. Paradigmatisch läßt sich dies am Gang der neuzeitlichen Philosophie von Descartes bis Kant verfolgen. Gerade an ihren philosophischen Ansätzen zeigt sich aber zugleich, daß jene Suche nach einer Universalwissenschaft, sofern diese auf einem unbedingten Prinzip beruhen muß, in keinem Finden sich beruhigen kann. Dieses Dilemma drückt Friedrich von Hardenberg am Beginn seiner Vermischten Bemerkungen prägnant aus in der Sentenz: Wir suchen überall das Unbedingte und finden immer (...) nur Dinge. (shrink)
